Utility bay stuff

These are some pretty basic things but they make my RV experience a little easier. When we got our new Winnebago, the shore line cable was simply coiled in the utility bay. This took up most of the room there and if there was anything else in there, it would get dragged out along with the cable when we'd go to hook up. In our case there was an extra small compartment just aft of the utility bay so I unhooked the cable from the transfer switch, bored holes to connect the compartments, install bushings and pulled the cable into the utility bay from the aft compartment then reconnected the cable to the transfer switch. I also bought a 'flapdoor' from the RV shop and put it into the aft compartment floor. Now I can pull out the amount of cable I need, then feed it out the flapdoor and close the compartment door. Inside the aft compartment I also mounted a 'broom clip' to hold my 50/30 Amp adapter and put in a 'dummy' 120 volt outlet to hold the 50 amp to 120 Volt adapter. I'd also considered running another water line to the front of the RV to provide windshield washing water but realized freezing weather made this a non-starter. What I settled on was getting garden hose fittings for 3/8" hose from a brewing supply, cutting the outside sprayer hose, and inserting it there. Now I can 'split' the sprayer hose, insert a length of garden hose and reach the windshield. Hot water plus the commercial squeegee/window mop on a paint roller extension handle I got makes cleaning bugs a breeze. This also makes using the blackwater tank flush easier as I don't have to unhook the main water supply...can do it with the sprayer line. In the utility compartment I also mounted a paper towel roll holder and a soup can painted to match to hold a bottle of hand soap. A right angle hose fitting also helps the water hose exit the utility bay. In the sewer compartment, I mounted a Kleenex box holder from Amazon and use it to hold a box of latex gloves. None of these things are really spectacular but together they make hook up a lot more pleasant!

  • Added a couple more helpers to the utility bay! I added a shower wand holder to the front grille of the RV as a place to hang the sprayer when I'm cleaning the windshield with the extended hose arrangement. Should make it easier to clean off the squeegee/window mop when it's bug-soaked. The other item was added since we often encounter a campground where the cable tv cable is just that, a short piece of cable with a female end by the power post. I got in the habit of carrying a double-male cable fitting to make the connection but the little thing had a habit of going missing when the campground had the proper male fitting on the post and I had to remove it from my cable. Our new Winnie has two male fittings in the utility bay, one for cable tv, the other for a remote satellite dish. Since our dish is roof mounted, the satellite fitting never gets used so I got a double female fitting to screw on there and now the double male piece has a home when not in use!

  • Looks great. You may want a cap for that water inlet 90. I used one of these (picture below). No bugs get into the water inlet and when I turn on the water pump and run off the tank I don't worry about that letting water spray out. I take it you use a one way valve on your black tank flush.
  • Those are some good ideas. I really like the shower hose disconnect and extension system; I may have to steal that idea at some point.

It seems slightly sketchy to me for the transfer switch to be placed in the same compartment as a shower, but I'm not an RV designer so I guess I'm not an expert on such things. Obviously you had nothing to do with that particular detail.
