Water Damaged floor replacement

I just bought my first travel trailer, a 2007 Dutchman that I believed was ready to go. Unfortunately I encounter a soft spot near the sliding glass doors that I didnt notice prior to purchasing the trailer. The soft spot was only about 10 inches in diameter and was near the bottom corner of the doors. I decided to cut away a piece of the laminate floor. Sadly, I discovered that the plywood was completely destroyed and the damage spread further than I expected. The ending result was that I cut out the laminate and plywood floor from the side wall to the first joist for approximately 10 feet along the outer wall. HERE are my questions finally... I believe replacing the plywood along with additional bracing underneath is pretty simple. However, the rotted plywood ran under the outer wall. I have been digging out the rotted wood between the outer joist and the outer wall. Also the joist is rotted (or at least soaked) as well. What should I do about this rotted joist as well as the space between that joist and its wall. I could cut out that joist but how would I attach the joist to the trailer, the plywood to the joist, then the wall to the plywood without completely tearing the wall out as well. Any ideas?

  • When I had a boat I used Git-Rot I think it was called, soaks into the wood to make it firm again, something that may help on wood you can't get out.
  • Yes I believe I know the source and will be testing and correcting that theory before I replace wood. Hadn't thought about sistering good idea!!!! Thanks will let you all know how it works out
  • Have you found, and fixed, the source of the water intrusion?
  • Depending on how far the rotted wood extends in toward the frame, can you "sister" a new joist along side of the old one. Bolt the new piece to a good section of the old wood and you are good to go.
