IMO, if you don't want to use the throw-away green bottles, yes, you can buy 100 of them for the $80, then buy a small tank to carry with you that can be refilled at almost every campground.

I don't want the hassle of the throw-away green bottles. They annoy me.
And generally the pricing for a small tank is fairly spendy. I looked at those first (plus, I'll still need a hose/adapter from that tank to the disposable size). When I looked at it, the pricing didn't seem to be that wildly different.
Good point on the wasting of propane on a 12' hose.
