Make sure you don't touch the LEDS with your fingers. The oils in your skin will deteriorate the life of the LED. Make sure you wipe off the LED with a clean soft cloth if you do happen to touch them.
Also, spikes don't kill LED's any more than constant over voltage does. Besides, a 12V "spike" is almost non-existent if there is a good battery installed.
