Transients (spikes or load dumps) can definitely shorten the lives of LEDs, especially ones relying only on resistors to limit current. An increase of only a few 100 millivolts forward voltage will cause a large increase in forward current. Short spikes cause cumulative damage to the bond wires and junction material leading to reduced output, increased resistance (and heating) and eventually the junction looses electrical contact and goes dark.
