WiFi enabled level

Here's a prototype of a WiFi enabled electronic level for use with my RV trailer.

The plan is to install it centrally inside the coach somewhere, and then while I'm in the cab of my truck, I can check the front/back and side/side level of the RV from my smartphone or tablet.

Mainly I intend to use it while boondocking in the NF or wally-docking, so I can get close to level without having to jump out of the cab, check the spirit levels, jump back in, move a little, repeat.

  • gee in other leveling threads the statement is always made that if you are comfy, it is level enough.
in this thread you need a PHD in advanced math to park a RV.

yup ... close enough is good enough for me, not real worried about how many inches or degrees.
  • Where did you source the accelerometer chip or does it come with the full circuit? Also, I'm liking that Wi-fi interface. I've been using bluetooth chips for some projects but it does have intermittent connection issues.

PM coming your way. BTW, very cool project!
  • The accelerometer is a cheap sensor I picked up from a MPJA, a surplus electronics reseller in Florida. Here's the link:

    ADXL345

The WiFi module is an ESP8266 ESP-12F ... they can be found for under $5 on eBay. They're also on Amazon. Anyone that's just starting out should get one with a USB connection (necessary for initial configuration and programming), like this:

    2pcs ESP8266 Module ESP-12E

Here's my project page on Github, if anyone wants to see the programming side of it:

    Github - esplevel
  • just wanted to make sure you didn't take my comment as 'foo-fooing' your effort, I actually think it's cool as heck.

I program ever day in C# but it's been a long time since I did any C, impressive project you got here.

  • Diagnostic web "app" is now working. This what I see on a smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc. All I do is browse to the level itself, and it serves up this page (connected to RV wifi hot-spot)

The sliders at the top move left/right from center, and the graph gives a few second "history" of the accelerometer

Ideally I will get a diagram or picture of my RV on there, and use simple arrows showing which sides are high/low... or something?

    Following along, here.

It should be noted that the ADXL345 chip has more functionality than just a spirit level. The data sheet explains the functionality and resolution aspects. It is a fairly sophisticated device. A user could enable it as a speedometer, also, for example.

GordonThree is offering up a design that chops a lot of price off a standalone electronic level. I prospected enabling something like this project awhile back and the price of a stand-alone electronic level was in the hundreds, more sophisticated industrial units, in the thousands.
