Window AC in the Fridge compartment

I have been contemplating how to use a window AC unit on camper.
Just as a given, and for discussion the roof unit is not an option,

There is no place on the back wall to use one. The only place would be the door, which is back wall, but the window opening on the door is about 14 inches, smaller than all window units width I see.

As a bonus I plan to get rid of the propane fridge and put a compressor chest in, though not in the fridge location. This leaves the fridge compartment as an option. I was looking forward to the extra storage space, but why not put the AC unit in here? There is already ample ventilation. It does not require to be waterproof, just a little water resistant from mist, so I can build the structure with wood and use duct tape to make it air tight if needed - though I would never rely on duct tape for a proper build…

Here the AC unit would not need to stick out, and on hot days with no rain I could even remove the access panel.

Other than lost storage space I do not see any drawbacks. I have seen window units stuck inside campers in much smaller spaces and the owner was happy.

Opinions not wanted, but professional feedback is OK, and I thought this was a good idea and maybe others want to try also.
  • I would put a mini in my RV in a heartbeat if I had room for the inside unit. However they are expensive to install properly. I have 3 in my house and have about $800 worth of tools for installing them.

A $99 window ac is likely going to be a 5000 btu unit, too small for most RV's. When I added one to my 21 foot Toyota I found that 8000 btu was the minimum. Although there was a 7100 btu available from the factory when new. No room over fridge or I would have put mine there, it has been done numerous times.

    Some can get very creative!

  • Don't forget you need to get rid of the condensation, you don't want it inside. It either needs a pan and drain or stick out enough to run outside.

Window unit $99, split, $600+, wont kill me but is more pricey.

On mixing, I think I could fab a baffle and direct the hot air up, pull cold air in lower outside vent. I have never played with window units. I have seen others build boxes and do it and those must mix, so how big of an issue is it?

    thanks
  • You'll need to do something to keep the inlet and exhaust air for the condenser from mixing.
  • This will definitely work, as the refrigerator space is actually a non fire temperature chimney, more than capable of getting rid of the AC exhaust heat. A brilliant way to do it really.
