Another method I have used is purchase a piece of project board from Lowe's or HD. As the OP stated, he would like to move the thermostat higher up on the wall, but there is some sort of monitor panel in that area.
By using a 1/4" x 6" or 8" project board, rounding the corners or trimming it, giving it a finished look, the monitor could be moved up higher along with the thermostat, covering the old holes & making new ones for the monitor & new thermostat.
just a thought.
