My only recommendation is this: Please don't drive it when anything on it is malfunctioning. Also, please replace the brake fluid annually. I was in Colorado this summer when this happened to a family in a four-place UTV. I have been over Corkscrew Pass many times on a dirt bike. I'm convinced that the brake fluid in the UTV boiled, which the sheriff described as "lost their brakes". I've seen it happen several times on dirt bikes out there. I always flush the brake system on my dirt bike with fresh fluid annually, just before I head to Colorado.

Two people were killed and two injured in an ATV accident at Gladstone Tuesday evening, Aug. 16, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Bruce Conrad said “A husband and wife were ‘flight-for-lifed’ out ... and their son and their son-in-law were both killed.” It happened on County Road 10, near the temporary water treatment plant operated by the EPA at Gladstone. The ATV tumbled down an embankment into Cement Creek. Silverton Ambulance, Silverton Fire Department, and the Sheriff’s office responded. Two helicopters ferried the injured to Mercy Medical Center in Durango. “The accident is under investigation,” Conrad said.
Conrad said Wednesday morning that while still under investigation, “Potentially the story is that they were coming down and didn’t have any transmission and lost their brakes and went over the edge at a high rate of speed.” Conrad described the two survivors as critically injured. KTRE-TV News in Lufkin, Texas, identified the two men killed as Christopher Ryan King, 33, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and his brother-in-law, Bryson Kyle Adkison, 26. Both died at the scene and were here on a family vacation. Adkison’s parents, Lanita Box Adkison, 51, of Garrison, and Gary Lynn Adkison, 53, of Garrison, were injured. Howard said Lanita Adkison’s injuries are life-threatening and she is being treated at a Denver hospital. Gary Adkison’s injuries are not life-threatening and he is being treated at a hospital in Durango. KTRE reported that Holly Springs Baptist Church Elder Chuck Howard said the family arrived in Colorado on Saturday and were going to return this week. The wives of King and Bryson Adkison were also reportedly on vacation and were at a campsite when the incident happened. Conrad said that it’s unclear how familiar with the backcountry the driver was in this case, “But I do know far too many people are taking far too much risks in these mountains lately.” Conrad suggested “We should be informing visitors of how unforgivingly dangerous these mountains can be as well.”
