06 Dodge 3500 Dually 48RE died..

After towing my Carriage Cameo for 71,000 miles my 48RE transmission died. Lost 2nd gear. I just had the transmission rebuilt with a billet shaft, must stronger valve body and TC. Cost to rebuild $4600.00. Hopefully with all the beefed up parts this will last a while. Would love to hear if anyone else had transmission troubles with a 48RE.

Thanks,

MW

    Good deal!

Very odd for a 06 to go bad at that mileage, especially with proper maintenance.
  • Not to start a war but the extra capacity pan's don't do any good. Your best bet is the largest cooler you can stuff in there! What trans oil temps are you running pulling the 5er?
  • You should be good to go now. I did mine at 170k, and now has 220k.
  • Yes the 71,000 is total miles, however I'd guess 60% of those are towing. I also went with a larger capacity pan.
  • I'm curious, Is that 71k total miles or 71k towing miles? My 48RE has 85k and it functions well. I put on a BD extra capacity oil pan and I do a splash and fill of 7 quarts every 10-12k. I adjust the bands myself and am due again at 92k. I know I will have to throw money at it eventually but had hoped to get at least 125k. I'm only towing 10,000 pounds and only about 20% of total miles.

2007 with 5.9L and 48re tranny (all stock no tuner)

    Serviced at 25K
    42K started slipping/jerky shifts

    Tranny replaced under warranty.
    Drums/clutches destroyed

I waited for tranny tech and pulled him aside for a chat
    "Straight skivey....WHAT/WHY at 42K?"

""Whoever did the last band adjustment...$*$&% it up!""

Service was done at Dodge Dealership Bradenton FL
Replaced at Dodge Dealership Casper WY

No issues since ....service every 25K (+/-)
    120K on new one
  • Mike, If you don't mind me asking who did the transmission rebuild work?

    Henry

  • PLEASE tell me they installed a Billet flex plate???????

Had you ever changed fluid? Had you ever had the inside and outside bands adjusted?
