1/2 ton towable TH

Hello. Looking to get a toy hauler, used, that I can tow with my 2014 f-150 ecoboost. Will need hauling a polaris Rzr 4 900. In the $5000-7000 range. Seen a few Carsons fun runners and Thors in that range. Any thoughts suggestions? Needs to sleep 2 adults 3 kids. Doesn't have to have fuel station or generator though I prefer on board generator. Thanks

No like 12 at the most. I've got a buddy towing a 26ft toy hauler with a f150 ecoboost and he goes up hills doing speed limit no problem. His empty weight is 7500lbs. Are you thinking my truck isn't enough? Wasn't sure what you meant by freaked out.

Your buddy was so over his GVWR and hitch rating, he probably had no idea.

My buddy owned a 2002 FS2600 Warrior. We had a tongue weight scale.
Empty, the tongue weight was 1700lbs.
Full water with no toys, the tongue weight went up to 2100lbs.
Put 3 quads in the back, with full water, tongue weight went back down to 1700lbs.

No 1/2 ton receiver is rated for that much tongue weight.
Only newer 250/350 type trucks come with enough receiver to handle that much weight.

What I meant by freaked out is you won't like how it handles in wind, braking etc.

It's not all about the motor or HP.
  • It depends on the half ton. Mine being that it has the heavy duty/max towing packages has an 8200 lb GVWR with a tow rating of 11,100 lbs. My trailer has a GVWR of 7650 lbs. I don't remember the exact numbers from when I weighed it but with 2 quads and all our gear it was around 6500 lbs. The truck handles it easily, including braking etc. If I was towing all the time I'd maybe look at a bigger truck but for what we do with it I'm happy.

Ugggg... Its not about how fast you can get up the hill. A 1/2 tons shortcoming are generally not whats under the hood so miuch as the rest of the truck. Brakes, spring rates, axle ratings, tires, chassis.

1/2 tons and touhaulers dont generally mix well especially if your going to be loading another 1500lbs RZR into the mix.
  • Yeah the SxS would always be out when sleeping so that's not an issue.

Ok, so the weight on the rear end causing sway issues makes sense. I could see that. Like said, might have to back it in.
  • I've got a 2014 F-150 EB with the heavy payload/max tow package. I tow a 2007 Weekend Warrior Superlite FK2100. It tows it very well. The floor plan shows 12'9" length in the main area. You'd have to unload the SxS to have enough sleeping capacity though.

  • Need to be careful with "1/2 ton towable" toyhaulers. They have low hitch weights meaning you can't load much behind the axles of the trailer without getting nasty sway. My father's 2016 Stryker 2912 was like that. He towed with a 3500 DRW and it would wag that dog unless he backed his 900 XC into the living area, almost in the kitchen.

  • Won't find much that won't freak you out towing with that truck.
Especially with a 4 seat RZR. Aren't they like 15' long?
