2" coupler problems

I have a Wells Cargo enclosed snow mobile trailer, with a 2" A frame coupler. It's the annoying coupler where you have to slid the latch forward, and then up to release the ball. It's hard to deal with, and hard to use.

I really like the 2 5/16" coupler on my big cargo trailer. It just slides forward & backwards, and is real easy to use.

Any advice, before I decide to chop off the 2" A-frame coupler, and rebuild it for a wider 2 5/16" coupler.

I need something easy to use.

  • Pull up on the handle is all I have to do on multiple trailers I tow with that couple.

I can't get mine to perform any "sliding action"

All I do it pull up, and it releases.
  • YEs, that's the one.

Nothing can be "unwelded". They grind down the welds until nothing it left..... and weld something else on top.
  • Is it this style?

Most of these can be unwelded and a new style welded in it's place. I can't speak to warranty or safety but its not that hard to change the.
  • Have you tried cleaning out the coupler (remove any dirt/grease/grime) and then lube it?

I've never seen one that slides forward to release it.
  • It's your trailer, and you can fix it the way you want it to be. Plenty of different styles of couplers out there. If you know how to weld on (or otherwise attach) the new one, so much the better.
  • It's a ATWOOD flip latch coupler. If you ever seen one, you'll understand. If you never experienced one, it's not the most intuitive to use either.

During the winter, it's even harder.
  • Without explaining what you mean by "hard to use," I can only guess at the issue.

My guess is that you mean it is hard to release, and that is a common complaint. Many do not understand that there is a safety feature to prevent the trailer bouncing off the ball that comes into play when the ball exerts pressure on the shoe at the back of the capture mechanism. If you try to lift the trailer before unlatching, or if the TV is pushing backward, the latch locks down.

The cure is simple: chock the traler wheels so it can't roll forward and put just a bit of pull on the trailer, THEN unlatch before attempting to lift the trailer free. The latch should release easily with a single finger pull.
