I didn't see anyone raise the issues, but if you use 6v batteries in series, it's much safer to have four than two. If any one battery poops out, you'll still have a good pair of functioning batteries and everything will run OK. But with just two, if one dies, you don't have a 12v system anymore and you're sunk.
