2004 Keystone Sprinter 282RLS

Advice/Info Please --- I am strongly considering purchasing a one owner 2004 5th wheel made by Keystone. Model 282RLS. Seems to be very well maintained. Very clean. Sprinter series.

Does anyone have feedback ( positive or negative ) on this unit? Handling, maintainability, reliability, etc..

I'm new to RV'ing. My wife and I are retiring and hope to use this for extended trips around the country.

Thanks in advance for any information.

  • and be prepared for very low "GPM" haha MPG dependent on a lot of things but looks like it will be 7 to maybe 10, do not drive by a gas station keep it full, do not figure exactly when to fill up by your odometer (head winds and tail wind and speed) so much to calculate just stop and fill up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you will thank me for that one, and your DW will be a lot happier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I just made my first long trip in a 2004 252 fwrls and I am very pleased, like you the unit checked well, advice given to me on this forum .
DiTTTTo " check the roof "" if the unit does not have a ladder bring one. the roof is walkable and that is stated on the 2004 literature I downloaded from keystone. roof should be tight and not floppy on top the rubber should feel like rubber and not chaffy and deteriorated.. edges and seems around vents sealed and not cracked.
check for water damage inside, open all storage doors and check the corners and seams in them. look up when you open large out side access storage bins. bounce on the floor when you walk inside, especially around sinks, toilet and tub.
check the tires for ages (you may need to replace if old) think someone said 5 years ??
if you really want to get dirty check the square of the unit in 2 locations, in a x pattern underneath from spring shackle to the other front corner in both directions, if way off walk away. (a guy at keystones help line that worked the manufacturing plant told me that) check the square on the tail end top left to bottom right and compare to the other direction. (these measurements take two people to be accurate and need a ladder)
turn everything on and run it.(both gas and electric if the appliance is dual) I bought from a very small dealers and the check out was almost two hours.

this was my first RV as well and if its not good walk away, I am very pleased with the 04 sprinter so far, but realize they are used and you might have to turn a nut or bolt soon. GOOD LUCK
  • Thank you all very much for the feedback. I pay for the unit on Monday. Let the adventure begin!

  • WE have a keystone hornet 275 and love it but we bought it new. Just can't part with it although it is just the dw and I so maybe not as much wear and tear.
  • Well for what is worth in all of our camping years(about 50) we have owned 4 sprinter campers, bumper pulls fifthwheels and have pulled them all over the country, never had any trouble with the units we have owned but we have had trouble with the items installed in them Refrigerator, hot water heater etc and etc. We felt for the money they were the best buy for the money and served there purpose, enjoyed them, Keystone builds a good product in the Sprinter. Happy Camping
  • I own the exact same Sprinter 282 model. Bought it new in 2004 and have had zero problems with it from the get go. For its size, the floor plan is hard to beat. The kitchen is a huge winner, awesome counter space. As mentioned from others, check the roof. Did the previous owner store it indoors? We have and the roof in perfect. This winter I'm going to remodel it and update its look. I just can't sell the darn thing because I like so much. Danny
  • On the roof, look at the seams. The caulk should not have cracks or missing pieces.

  • DannyA - I got up on the roof. Looked okay to me. The owner mentioned that he has applied the treatment as per vendor recommendation. There was no evidence of leaks in the ceiling or when you looked in the cabinets.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  • Check and double check the roof very expensive to put on there.
I had an 07 that I had to put a new roof on so I know!
I would want to buy cheap enough so if I had to put a new roof on in the next few years I would not be over priced.

We have had our 2005 Sprinter Copper Canyon 293FWSLS for four years, and love it. It is a mid-range not the high end finish, but still well built.
We did a little pre-Retirement hosting this year and spent a 5 week stint at a local park. No issues.
