Will the above truck safely handle a 38' 5th wheel?
Depends on the trailers actual wet pin weight.
The Big Country 3450 sows to be a 15500 GVWR trailer with a 3000 lb CCC.
This trailer has a 3100 lb pin weight potential if its loaded to 15500 lbs.
The 2500 GM has a 6200 RAWR and can weigh 3000 lb on the rear axle when empty. Now add a 250 lb hitch and another 250 lbs for gear and people = 3500 lbs on the rear axle. Now add 3100 lb pin weight = 6500-6600 lbs.
Your 2500 GM Dmax/A will have no problems pulling a 15500 lb trailer....... as any 3/4 ton truck it simply doesn't have the RAWR for carrying that much pin weight.
You would have to upgrade the rear spring set/tires and wheels for more capacity ......which is what GM does with the 3500 SRW truck.
Well JuimnLin caught the fact he has another post looking at the Heartland Big Country BC 3450TS.
Technical Specifications:
Length 38' 4"
Width 8'
Height 12' 11"
Dry Weight 11,950
Payload Capacity 3,550#
GVWR 15,500#
Hitch Weight 2,200#
The Dry hitch is 2,200# about 18.4%, BIG basement, so the percentage will go up. so assume not pack rats, and add 2,000# of stuff. Now a 14,000# with a likely pin of 3,000# (22%).
Yep, time for at lease a 3500 SRW, and on the verge of a DRW.
I tow over GVWR, but not close to axle or tire ratings. I wouldn't do it.
