2014 Rubicon 2900

We are looking to upgrade to a Rubicon 2900. Anyone have experience with one? good? bad? ugly?

Looking to tow with a 2013 GMC 2500 diesel Trailer gross is 12k. my biggest concern is the tongue weight. the 2014 models weigh 1k more than the 2013's and tongue weight is now 1534 which is over what GMC recommends. Anyone know if the tongue weight is based off gross or empty weight? we keep getting mixed answers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • I did have to put a class V hitch on my ram.

I use http://www.fastwaytrailer.com/e2/hitchstyles.php. I got the trunnions style one for 10000lbs works just find for me. First time using a WD hitch so I have nothing to compare it to.

I have a 2013 2900. You should be fine with a wd hitch and how you load it makes a difference I find. I love my camper. Did a drive last summer from homer Alaska to Maryland then to New Orleans. Lived out of the thing for 3 months wife,me,3 kids and a dog. Room wise we love it. I don't like the microwave oven in it. It's only good as a microwave can't really bake in it. And I hate the shower cause it seats high up. Other then that we think it's great. The only real problems I had was it leaking on the slide which was a quick fix I did.(just needed some new sealant on it) and I chipped a tooth on slide gear(my fault I learned the hard way that if the slide doesn't want to go out look around first before you keep pushing the button). I tow it with a ram 2500.

What kind of weight distribution hitch do you use?

I would do some research on what kind of receiver hitch the GMC has. Fortunately for me, the 2013 Ram 2500 receiver hitch was beefed up to a class V 1800LB rating. You might need to replace the factory receiver with an upgraded unit if it's close or over.
  • Thanks for the info! We really like the camper but just were so worried about the weight ratings. From everyone we talk to it seems okay......

  • I don't have any experience with the Rubicon. I'm not a fan of Dutchman products but that's me - opinion.

The published weights of trailers are going to be dry weights - no gear no fuel etc. The tongue weights on toy haulers are a lot heavier than the typical trailer. They are made tongue heavy when dry because when you add your "toys" a lot of that weight might be sitting on or behind the rear axle of the toy hauler. All that weight behind the rear axles will ease up on the tongue weight. Either way you are going to want to make sure

It's a pain but you get used to it after a while.
