Another variable that influences bed rail height is size of wheels/tires. I was wondering dealership parking lots end of last year (and shall I say, successfully fought off urge for new truck!) and it became quite striking the difference in bed rail height on the Ford lot (likely the same for Chevy and Ram). It had the appearance of a bed that was not as deep between models. That seemed unlikely, tape measure proved it, the difference ended up being the wheel/tire size. The trend is to bigger "pretty boy" wheels (yes, the 20" wheels were stock on my '09 and not worth the cost to swap out).
Wonder an RV dealership with a tape measure, see what the distance is from 5er overhang to the ground, they vary from model to model. Do the same on the dealership lots for bed rail height.
