2015 F-250 and Silverado 2500 bed heights

I'm buying my first tow vehicle and don't have a 5th-wheel yet. A friend said to keep the bed height and side rail height in mind, since there's a risk of the tailgate and side rails bumping/rubbing the overhang of the 5th wheel. Which truck would you recommend between a 2015 F-250 and 2015 Silverado 2500 (both diesel). Any other recommendations or cautions with either of these trucks?
Thanks in advance!

  • Another variable that influences bed rail height is size of wheels/tires. I was wondering dealership parking lots end of last year (and shall I say, successfully fought off urge for new truck!) and it became quite striking the difference in bed rail height on the Ford lot (likely the same for Chevy and Ram). It had the appearance of a bed that was not as deep between models. That seemed unlikely, tape measure proved it, the difference ended up being the wheel/tire size. The trend is to bigger "pretty boy" wheels (yes, the 20" wheels were stock on my '09 and not worth the cost to swap out).

Wonder an RV dealership with a tape measure, see what the distance is from 5er overhang to the ground, they vary from model to model. Do the same on the dealership lots for bed rail height.
  • You haven't given any info on the size FW you are considering. If you need a diesel to pull it, you may want to get a 350/3500, to get the payload to carry it. The 350 will likely have a little more bed height, than a 250.

Can't comment on the tow vehicle choice.....

however - the clearance may depend more on the height of the *trailer* - or the ability to *adjust* the height of the trailer to work with your choice.

Sure - most likely *any* trailer can be modified to clear - but what will that entail..:h

Some are mfg with provisions to do that, others do not - resulting in expensive mods.

Check and double check that info - and do *NOT* believe a dealer or salesperson without concrete evidence of same!..:W
(Get them to commit in writing to setting it up as part of the deal).

Also, when you *think* you have the choice made, call the tech line of the trlr mfgr before you sign on the dotted line - and ask lots of questions.
