2017 Ran 2500 8' Bed and hitch suggestions

Hi
I'm looking at a new Ram 2500. Inclined to go with an 8'box. Truck will have 5ver package, but I'm surprised what little help RV dealers are concerning hitches; well in fact dismal help in many areas.

A shorter box is appealing, but thinking if I'm starting from scratch should likely go with long box

Suggestions and warnings concerning hitch?

Thanks,
Bill

  • Dodge Ram with fiver package, should include pucks for hitches. What hitch or hitches are recommended by Dodge that fit its puck system? That should narrow it down to two or three hitches. That should help you, get a hitch that will handle more 5th wheel than you have, it will then serve you if and when you upgrade.
  • Now towing my 3rd fiver with a 1997 Dodge 3500 DRW and Reese 20K hitch, just turned 205,000 miles

I would suggest if looking new to look also at a 3500, BUT see you live in Connecticut so may have registering cost issues with a 3500. Hitch B&W, Reese twin jaw, I would stay away from sliding bar hitches.

A 3500 was my first choice, but payload was triple my needs. By going with 2500 and air bags if I need, I can stay with the coil suspension of 2500 which will be better when off road with the truck. The 3500 is a one ton and tho drives quite well on pavement unloaded, it does have stiff leaves. I'm visiting the RV mfg to get their input too

    And Thanks
  • Look at B&W hitches. Have a lever that closes jaws around kingpin. Back up then pull the lever and pin it to lock. Look in to see silver jaws around kingpin and you are ready to go. We saw a guy in campsite next to us backup then raised landing gear and when they left a half hour later his 5ver dropped on his bedrails. Showed him our B&W and he said he was ordering one from Tweedys when he got home.
