So I was at my dealer today getting an oil change on my Ram 3500 CC SRW SB HO Bighorn and he had a new Laramie Longhorn DRW on the lot and it really was amazing.
Anyway, I appreciate one posters comparison on Ram versus Ford. I do like Ford and I would own a Ford if I could buy one similarly equipped for the same price but Ford hasn’t up to this date been able to meet Ram’s price.
I call Ford a thoroughbred fast strong and just probably still the best work truck.
I call Ram the prize bull snorting ready to pull, not fast but it will tow anything you put behind it all day long. No doubt Ram with the Aisin is a medium duty drivetrain truck.
Chevy/GMC are not on my list only because I don’t like the interiors and that’s just me. I don’t want to offend anyone cause we all know they are great trucks.
We are living in the age of great trucks.
Now the reason why everyone wows over a CTD, in my opinion, is Cummins is the master of the truck world. That’s all they do.
Let me give you an example from another walk of life. My company has a gas generator that requires a new starting motor. This is a utility grade gas generator - old but it works well for peaking power. So looking at the specs of the old motor the only and I mean only manufacturer that could provide this special engine was Cummins. We bought it, put it in and Cummins brought in a special engineer and tuned it to exactly what we needed, which again none of the others could do this at that time.
I really think Cummins will have an advantage over the others indefinitely. They can match, exceed or beat the competition nearly at will and they do so in a way that just stokes people to buy more. Look at how motorhomes are sold you get a 300, 320, 340,360, 380 and so on and up to 380 right now it’s the same motor in a Ram truck. They are the first to 1000 ft-lbs. On motorhomes they play the game and to get a 380 hp CTD you are looking at stickers around $300000 and it’s the same engine in my $57000 Ram.
So Chevy is not in the game trying to meet Ford and Ram on numbers but Ford will up the ante soon. Question is do we really need 1000 or 1200? Probably not. That Duramax will be fine at 900+ ft-lbs. So my CTD was tied w Ford and now I’m behind after 4 months. Frankly I would be fine w a third gen CTD w 350hp and 550 torque.
But the numbers sell trucks!
