3-axle tire wear.

We bought a new 3-axle TH 5er March, 2012. It's my first 3-axle. I dont make sharp turns or run over curbs to throw the axle's outta wack. But, the outside and inside of the front and rear axle tires are showing good signs of wear and will have to be replaced in the near future. I know that 3-axle's are known for dragging those axle tires. It's a long shot but, just wanted to find out if anyone knows how to get more life outta 3-axle tires OR am i looking to replace tires every 1 1/2- 2 years???

  • I had a triple Axle 5er for many years. The first set of tires had unusual wear in just a couple thousand miles.I had all three axles realigned. They were misaligned from the factory. After putting on all new tires, I had no more unusual wear on any tire.I would suggest having the alignment checked.
  • Have you taken it in to a commercial heavy duty truck alignment shop? I had two tires wearing badly on a 3 axle trailer when new. I took it in for a full alignment. THEN put new tires on. Towed it 6000 miles this winter, with NO known wear, wheras before it had bad wear in 3000 miles.
  • I don't think it's a triple axle problem, mine show no unusual wear and looked up to the point the 2 rear ones blew out. But I think that is a due to substandard tires, not unusual wear.
  • I have had my 3 axle WW since 05 and are on my second set of tires. Had to replace the orginals (Generals) because they timed out instead of wear. The Maxxis's are now getting close to needing replaced because of time and still have plenty of tread left.

You may have an alignment issue or some other issue causing the wear. I would check your area and see if you can find an alignment shop that can do the job.
  • That is normal wear due to tire scrub. It just happens fast because the trailers all come with $hit tires. Best bet is asking your tire dealer for something that'll wear better.
