50 to 30 amp question

When you have to connect your 50 amp rig to 30 amp service, it is my understanding that after inserting the adaptor, you then connect the 50 amp surge protector, and plug your electrical cord from the RV into that. Should we have a 30 amp surge protector in this instance? I guess we are a bit confused, and learning about our new 50 amp versus the 30 amp we currently have. Thanks!

  • When I have to use 30amp and adapter my surge protector gives me a fault-open ground so I don't use it.I think I need a 30amp protector
  • Hi,

The surge protector will work fine, no matter the amperage that you connect to.

Yes you will need to watch the amperage that you use, so that you do not exceed the 30 amp limit. Personally, I have a 30 amp RV, and never tripped the incoming power cord in 20+ years of RVing.

  • A good way to think and it works pretty good, NEVER run 3 large items at once on 30 amp. Any 2 things work. One hair dryer and air / one hot water and air/ microwave and hair dryer ect. TV's dont seem to matter or lights, just those heavy amp items. So far all good no breakers popping.
  • If you have the installed system you never have to worry about it. Just plug in and your good. Post, 30-50 amp dog bone, Surge Guard, 50 amp power cord to trailer.

You will find power limited while on the 30 amp supply. May have to put the hot water heater on gas and turn the AC off before running the microwave. We were on 30 amp last week and tripped the post breaker 2x. :( Need to watch you power consumption. The display on the Progressive Industry installed unit allows you to see how much your drawing. Don't know if the Surge Guard will show you amps being drawn. Just a thought.

This is what the 30A to 50A ADAPTER looks like schematic wise. NOTE the wiring connection is wired to both your 50AMPS HOT Power Zones with a jumper meaning both your 50AMP ZONEs inside your trailer will be powered up with 120VAC. Since your 50AMP Power Zones is only powered by a 30AMP BREAKER in the campground pedestal you will have to watch what you have turned on at the same time. You will overload the pedestal 30AMP breaker if you for instance turn on both air conditioners at the same time etc..

Connected to your 50AMP DUAL 120VAC Power Zones will look like something like this

I imagine your 50AMP SURGE PROTECTOR will be installed between your trailer 50AMP Shore Power Cable and the 30A-50A Adapter which will be plugged into the 30AMP Campground Pedestal connection. I would definitely ask the manufacturer about this.

Hope this helps somewhat on how the adapters work for you...

  • I had a similar question for my 50 amp TRC surge protector. I contacted them and they told me it is protected when plugged into 30 amps.

That said, my advice is contact the manufacturer of your surge protector, and see what they say.
