Obviously we don't have a 42'er, but we almost exclusively boondock. We also dry camp on occasion (parking lots), and we will be in a campground 3 weekends this coming summer. We normally spend 40 to 60 nights a year in our 5er, but did 100 last year (it was new and we didn't want to leave it alone!). I am guessing you will have a residential fridge in a rig that size. Power will be one of your biggest issues, if you solve that then you can go wherever you can fit.
Just don't be afraid to get out and look at your top and bottom clearance when you are driving in to the spot you want to go. Better yet is to check the spot with your pickup before pulling your 5er in.
