You have stated several times you heard a big band, did you feel anything???
I would think if the rear bumper was bent up, either you hit something, or something hit you! Seeing how you have said you were driving down the road, I would assume someone may have run into you. I think it is pretty hard to hear a loud bang from the 5er without feeling something to go along with it.
