5th wheel hitch security

I'm a new 5th wheel owner and I'm wondering if I should worry about having the 5th wheel hitch stolen out of the truck if I leave it mounted on the rails.
It's just so darn heavy I can only remove it with help from my son. Otherwise I have to leave it mounted in the truck.
  • Initially I locked up my $3k hitch with a cable. Then I thought, "What's the point. No one is strong enough to lift that thing out of there." I also keep it covered with a tonneau. You can't see it when I'm towing and it is covered the rest of the time.
  • People will take anything... Friend had the tailgate of their Ram stolen while at a hotel in OKC. So, you never know. I don't have mine locked in any way, but you need the right tools to steel it. I do have a locking bed cover which I close when not towing.
  • A simple long shaft padlock (or 2) for peace of mind. But theft is highly unlikely unless you park or live in questionable areas.
  • Hitch stays in the bed and no issues. I do have a tonneau cover to keep it out of sight. The hitch does weigh 280#.

  • In all my years of owning a fifth-wheel, I never took the hitch out of the bed. Never a problem.
  • I've been on this forum for a while, and can't remember anyone saying the hitch was stolen from their truck. Many have a cover of sorts over the truck bed, when not towing, as I do. Of course out of sight helps, but I have never once thought, I hope no one steals my hitch.

Like you said, it is so darn heavy, just not an item to grab and run, or even toss into another waiting vehicle.

If you often park in places/areas, where crime is high it may get stolen. In this case, the entire truck may be stolen/towed off.

    IMO, don't worry about it!
