5th wheel hitch

Hopefully this doesn't sound as a dumb question. I am in the works to get a 5th wheel RV, all my past experience was with class A's.

Now that I have a good pulling truck I am looking into a 5th wheel RV.

My current truck has an old gooseneck style hitch that I need to get out and get a 5th wheel hitch.

my question other than capacity rating, are all 5th wheel RV same style connection? I don't want to buy a hitch only for it to be wrong one later.

Not sure what RV I will eventually get, but it will be within the 32-34 foot range with 3-4 slide outs.

I have a SRW 2005 Ford F350 superduty LX4 crew cab powerstroke 6.0 long bed.

Leveling kit installed in front, and 35" tall tires (22" x 12 wide wheels)

This combination works very well towing my boat around and very stable at highway or any speed. Its a 36' foot center console (with triple outboards) triple axle trailer (13-14K weight)

I do have a plastic bedliner installed, I would like to keep it.

  • I removed bedliner and it seems gooseneck hitch installed is a no-name home brew hitch. At least its bolted to frame and not welded. I will need to remove that setup and install a new hitch.

That leaves me to me original question.. Are all 5th wheel hitches the same? (I know hitch capacity is different)
  • I see no handle or latch on either side of frame where hitch is, so I don't think ball will be in there upside down.
  • I will laugh if the ball is upside down already in the hitch! LOL I need to remove my bedliner to see
  • I would call B&W and determine if their Companion or other models would work for you. If so, a post is included. I've installed mine over both a plastic and rubber Berliner. Tough to beat a B&W.

Why not use your gooseneck ball. I and thousands of others use the Andersen hitch. http://www.andersenhitches.com/Catalog/ultimate-5th-wheel-connection.aspx

that's super cool! I need to see if I can utilize this system.
  • That's my issue. the hitch came with the truck back when I purchased truck (used) Unfortunately I see no make or model on the hitch when I look from under truck, also it did not come with ball or item that goes in the hitch.

I have a bedliner covering the hole on top of the bed, I don't remember how the hole looked inside but It was round. and seemed like ball would "screw in"? I need to look into this more...

hitch is fully under bed, Only center mount can be seen, and its almost flush with bed. Also connector was mounted rear back inside of bed for connection to trailer.
  • What brand is your gooseneck? You may be able to use a B&W Companion or Anderson that plugs into your gooseneck.
