OP'er if the pic of the rusty "new" hitch is the one you were using I can see why it came unhitched.
I have high hitched mine one time. When I couldn't get the locking tab to close right I knew then something was wrong. I rehitched and rechecked everything then was good to go. If you can't easily close the locking latch, you have a problem.
