5th wheel winter cover

I have my 5th wheel parked at a camp ground on the south shore of lake Erie where it has been since April ( Oak Harbor area ) I plan on leaving it there over the winter and would like some suggestions on a good quality cover. I have looked at some on C/W and Amazon. I think that a cover that will keep the rain and UV off will cost 300.00 + but I haven't found one that didn't have negative reviews. I would also like to find one that would last at least 3 years. I could bring it home and put it inside but it would be a lot simpler to just winterize it and leave it there. It does not get any colder there then here at the farm (north central Ohio) and I will blow out the lines - pump in anti freeze shut everything down and in general winterize like I have been doing for the last 45 years. Suggestions ????

I don't know why it lists me as a new member I joined back in 2010 ??
maybe because I havent been on here in awhile. ??
  • I've used Adco over the years with good results. I like putting the camper away clean in the fall after all the winterizing. I go pretty deep when it comes to winterizing and it's nice to open it up in the spring looking ready to go. We get a lot of wind and snow up here in the northeast. With the right attention to detail, a cover can be a huge asset. I recommend it.
  • Covers are like tires lots of debate. Many mfg's say dont use them. Never seen rigs covered in dealers lots. However I store under large Oak trees (no choice) and leaves can make a heck of a mess on the roof. I cover during fall then remove it. It is a PITA but neccessary. I did leave it on one year and needed to remove it in Feb it had frozen ice and was a nightmare to remove. Thats my "cover story"
  • We use a Sunshield tarp and have for years. Black side up for winter use.
  • The last time that I posted on this site I was a senior member with a lot more then 7 posts. As I recall I had way over one hundred posts. O well no big deal. Someone screwed up. What's new.

Covers? I used Adco for years. Only problem was the rain gutters poking holes in the corners. I still have the cover for my 31 foot Springdale. Too small for my 35 footer I have now. Quit using the covers a few years ago because we driveway - winter camp too much. Always a pain to move the cover around to get in and out the door, and tie and retie it so the wind won't flop it around. And we started taking winter trips. Nothing worse than having snow on the roof and trying to remove the cover.

It's a personal choice. I see no difference with a cover than without a cover. The only REAL difference I've seen is, it take a lot more work to use a cover than to NOT use one! :)

I've talked to a couple people who have had covers made by the same people to make custom boat covers. You can have one custom-fitted to =your= FW, with extra material in rub spots, zippers for doors and windows, tie down locations, etc. Yes, it would be more expensive, but you could choose the best materials and dictate the construction.

  • My wife insisted on a cover for winter storage. She got one that cost about $400. I bought a large trash can on wheels as recommended in the cover instructions to store it in the spring, but only about half the cover would go into the trash can. I added a few moth balls and stored it in a small barn. When we got it out the next fall, it was all chewed up by squirrels and worthless.
It seemed like a good idea that just didn't work out and the trailer was fine with just an A/C cover after this past winter.
