5th Wheels in NY considered "House Trailers"?

Hey All,

New to the 5th wheel side of camping. Just renewed our new 5th wheel registration (picked it up in Nov 2018 but it expired Dec 31st) and in New York they apparently make you register 5th wheels as a "House Trailers"? Seems odd as it's not "Park Model" or permanent residence. Lady at the DMV couldn't give me an explanation why. Is there a certain weight threshold that designates them as "houses"?
  • Lived in NY all my life and have had a 5th wheel trailer and have never heard one called a "house trailer". I renewed mine several times and it was registered as a trailer just like my current trailer. Something doesn't sound right.

EDIT: After checking my regi today, it does say H/TR and mine is a TT. No idea when it changed. Maybe we can get tax breaks for owning 2 homes? Ya right!
  • Maybe it has something to do with the overall length or weight. My prior TT (23' and 4,500 lbs) was registered in NY as a trailer while the new one (32' and 8,800 lbs) is registered as a house trailer.
  • I think most places call them house trailers. You pull them down the road so they are a trailer. You live in them even if only part time so it is a house.
  • Just bought a fifth also. And I am also in NY. Bought from a private owner. Transferred to me no problem. No mention of "house trailer" on the title, just manufacturer name and weight. 14,000 LBS gross.
