My history is I have always had bumper pull trailers. I was wondering what the major advantages and disadvantages to a 5th Wheel are. I have heard that you cannot get into some areas due to poor roads as a 5er cannot roll back and forth as much as a bumper pull and so on. This is the kind of info I am looking for. I will be upgrading our rig in a few years including truck so I am looking at all my options. So in the fictional world of RV's of I had to 30 foot TT's one a bumper pull one a 5er and everything else was comparable what are my pros and cons?
Here's a few off the top of my head:
Pros of FWs:
*More stable towing.
*More interior room / ft of length.
*More storage in like length units.
*More maneuverable.
*Easier to hitch and unhitch, especially compared to a weight-distributing hitch on a bumper pull.
*Typically, you'll have more ground clearance and less tail-dragging.
*Can get by with a shorter overall RV due to the layout of a FW.
*More slides available for even more space.
Cons of FW:
*Loss of truck bed space.
*Bed clearance can be a problem, especially if you off-road but can be fairly easily increased if you need more space. (Personally, I have about 8" clearance and use nearly all of it to get into our usual spot for our family boondocker.)
*Weigh more than TTs.
