5vr vs Bumper pull what are the differences

My history is I have always had bumper pull trailers. I was wondering what the major advantages and disadvantages to a 5th Wheel are. I have heard that you cannot get into some areas due to poor roads as a 5er cannot roll back and forth as much as a bumper pull and so on. This is the kind of info I am looking for. I will be upgrading our rig in a few years including truck so I am looking at all my options. So in the fictional world of RV's of I had to 30 foot TT's one a bumper pull one a 5er and everything else was comparable what are my pros and cons?

  • Two TT's and now 5er. You lose bed space but it depends on what you need it for. If it's for normal camping gear then all that can go in the 5er basement. If you have a long bed then you have 3'+ in front of the 5th hitch to haul firewood, water jugs etc. The 5er will tow hands down easier. Hitching is also easier. Not faster, just easier. Unless you have 4-6 pt leveling. A 30' 5er with the truck will be 4' shorter overall than a comparable TT. You can turn around sharper with a 5er also. You can't turn 90* with a TT. Extra steps up to the bedroom in the 5er. That bothers some, mostly those that are not in good shape. One other thing that I like about having a 5er is that when I am hitched up and still needing access to the storage on both sides I'm able to walk under the 5er between the 5er and truck to get to both. With a TT you either have to climb over the tongue or walk around the truck or TT.
  • We are on our second fiver and love the way they tow. On the interstates you almost forget its there. I've never owned a bumper pull except my 22' trailer I pull my Kubota with. Last camping trip my neighbor and I started breaking camp at the same time. Before he even had all of his jacks up I was pulling under the trailer ready to go. He was amazed how much faster ours was ready.
Campground wise have yet to find one that could not accomodate us, may have been tight, but we fit. I also find it easier to back up. Also, get the biggest truck you can afford. Good luck.
  • Hook-up and un-hook; much easier and cleaner with the 5th wheel in my opinion. No bars to store. nothing greasy to handle.
  • A disadvantage of a FW is the loss of your truck bed for storage!

Do you have any water in your fresh water tank.? This is where your pump gets its water.

    ??????.
  • Easier pulling, shorter on road length are two big advantages. I have had both and have no desire to go back to a TT ever again.
