75 Speed Limit - How Fast

We are heading to Utah from NC. I-40 most of the trip with speed limits at 75mph along much of the way. I do NOT go that speed when pulling. What do you guys do?

ETA: Carlisle HD Radials rated to 81mph

I try to pull my 5th wheel at or close to 60. That equates to one mile per minute and if that is not fast enough then I should stay home. Too many people on the road with OEM China bomb tires!!! I'm running Goodyear Endurance and encourage everyone to think about their tires.

The LT’s on our 5er are rated at 103 mph! So I should be good up to about 100! :B
Interstate somewhere between 60 to 70 mph.

  • 62 ish for me. Above that and my mileage drops. I know it does not seem like much but if you get 10 mpg and drop to 9....it is a 10 % drop...which means you have to buy 10% more fuel. My tires are rated for 75 mph but no way will I tow that fast. In South Dakota the speed limit was 80 mph. There I was doing 62 but that is ok with me as I stay in the right lane.

63 -65 keeps me from getting speeding ticket in Calif. from CHP. I always drive with my Valentine Radar unit on. Speed is relative to each individuals comfort safety levels and ability tow and control your Trailer.

You would be better off around 60!
Many trailer tires are rated for 65, check yours.

    81mph....fixed my initial post
  • Consider the wind. west wind will take its toll, deduct the extra wind for added fuel.. ?
    better keep it at 60-65.
  • 63 mph for us. When towing. That even more important with ST tires, check their max speed. We have LT tires but going from 60 to 65 causes almost a 0.4 gpm loss for us.
