Toll Road Speed Limit

Motorists who travel too fast as they pass by E-Z Pass toll collection points may receive letters warning them to slow down while they use E-Z Pass lanes or else risk cancellation of their E-Z Pass accounts, but those letters are not law enforcement citations, nor are they based on speeds calculated by recording times of passage between two checkpoints.

I would really like to see someone post who ACTUALLY got a ticket from EZ Pass timing. I have seen warnings issued for driving too fast in the toll barriers but NEVER for anything other than that. I've got a feeling that there is much more urban legend than reality in this thread.

I don't think the citation would hold up in court. For one thing, if there is more than one person in the vehicle, there is no way to prove who was driving the vehicle for the the entire time while on the toll road. How can a vehicle be given a citation? A person needs to be cited, not the vehicle. Some of the Philadelphia recipients of the red-light cameras citations got their citations thrown out of court because the driver of the vehicle could not be identified.

Jim, The speed limit at most NJ toll booths is 15mph. Even the estimate of an untrained civil employee might be accepted by a judge for a vehicle doing more than three times the limit. The express lanes are whatever the posted limit is on that section of highway (between 45mph and 65mph) and are a big time and fuel saver especially when towing.

That would be illegal in CA.

I haven't seen the plane set up doing speed enforcement in a long time myself. I wonder if CHP quit using it for speed enforcement when they got radar? I got stopped by CHP once after being paced by the plane. It was kind of funny because I was working narcotics at the time and we were following a large scale drug dealer. We had five cars following the guy down the freeway and this idiot was doing 90 mph. We were having a hard time keeping up. We really had a hard time when we went through a airplane enforcement area and CHP got all five of undercover cars following the guy, but didn't stop the bad guy. So we lost him.

Virginia has no Law which says they can ticket for toll Road violations on timed miles. Virginia can only legally ticket you if they catch you speeding by, Radar, or other speed devices and cannot legally ticket you if they are hiding with their lights off at night. They can use cameras in cities for redlight violations but not rolling right tun at a redlight unless there is a vehicle coming or someone walking or on a bike is in the crosswalk. I live in Loudoun County and drive the Dulles
Toll Road frequently at 75 and have never received a warning.

I beat the flying skunk one time! Before my court date I sent a subpoena to the Washington State Patrol flight crew of that airplane. The prosecuting attorney sent the police airplane chase car officer to court. I requested to the judge to have my ticket dismissed due to hear say! I wanted the WSP Officer that timed me to appear not a chase car officer. My ticket was dismissed on hear say! I was told in Washington State the flight crews never appear in court due to it costs the State too much of a money revenue loss not having them in the air. Most people just pay the tickets!

Yes, tickets can be mailed out to speeders. Out West the weigh cops give commercial truckers tickets for speeding when there speed is timed between weigh stations. If the weigh station is closed tickets are mailed out to the truckers.
