How about your scenario except that one leg was not sinking. Maybe it was not pinned to the upper portion/leg creating same thing for your scenario.
So what is your take on that chunk of landing gear just laying out there on the ground and it appears that it is not damaged?

I had to take landing gear apart on a prior fiver I had due to raising legs "too high". This broke the gear (there's a small set in there like the diff on your truck)
During this surgery I found out a few things
-Don't raise it that high
-Made pretty flimsy
-One leg WILL hold the weight (I had on it then) for a while
So my theory on the bottom of leg laying loose off to side...
-He forgot/improperly put pin in, causing that side to sag/be low which was stated as the original problem.
When he tried to re-hook he pushed it off blocks and this leg got dragged out of upper tube as fiver rolled back?
