How about your scenario except that one leg was not sinking. Maybe it was not pinned to the upper portion/leg creating same thing for your scenario.
So what is your take on that chunk of landing gear just laying out there on the ground and it appears that it is not damaged?

The rig operator unhooked and noticed it low or sinking on one side, he then attempted to back tuck under it to rehook and reset. Since RV had dropped some the pin hit the hitch frame down low instead of sliding into slot.
He pushed it off the blocks which will easily bend the landing gear.

What makes you think the tailgate was closed. It sure looks like it was open. The way I read it was they were set up and pulled out only to notice it was leaning/coming down and tried to back under it to save it. Now, why it failed is still a mystery. You would think the OP would have spoke with them and have some sort of insight to add.
Also, if one side failed you have a lot of weight suddenly shifted to the other leg, that might explain why the right hand leg is lying in the grass several feet away. Would love to know the whole story.
