I don't mean to sound rude, but did you by chance read the manual?
Is the MODE on the thermostat set on COOL not AUTO? It should be.
You can set the FAN on AUTO, but if it's really hot, try setting it on HIGH. Set the temperature to where you want it. You should hear the fan come on high speed and the A/C compressor kick in. The compressor will shut off once the requested temperature is reached, but the fan will stay on high. You can then set the FAN to AUTO and it too, will shut off when the desired temperature is reached.
