Gramps: I hope you don't mind if I hijack a bit.
I've got a similar setup. 2000 F250 SRW, 5r 8K dry 1800# pin
Used to tow a TT.
I've got the same issues as you. I just installed air bags, getting ready for my first trip.
I've only pulled from dealer to home, 50 miles with no air bags. Hitting helper springs, and porpoise at times.
Hoping to eliminate these issues with bags.
I have a compressor package but haven't installed it yet.
I'll let you know my results in a couple weeks.
Thanks. Before our present truck and trailer I had a 2011 F250 with standard springs & a 2011 5th wheel. The 5th wheel weighed the same as yours. On a trip through Michigan the truck and trailer started porpoising so bad I thought I was going to loose control. I was a little nose high, standard pin box and most likely a little light on the pin. I'm now level, have a Mor/ryde pin box and try to make sure I have lots of pin weight. I saw a tremendous improvement. No more porpoisng and much less chucking. I still get a push pull effect on rough roads but not up and down so much now.
I'm anxious to hear your opinion. So far mostly positive feedback on air bags.
Grampscamper, I use airbags on a dually to help with the ride and squat. I am carrying more weight than you, but bags really are an improvement over just springs under the back. I have an onboard compressor so I can change the pressures in the bags as the roadway dictates. Won't tow heavily again without them. As far as porpoising, when you weighed it, how much was on the pin?
I was going to suggest you put F350 springs under it, but you already have basically the same ones.
Have you thought about the tires and tire pressures as a possible cause of the pushing?? I love the bags, have had them on 2 of my last 3 duallies, and they do make the ride a lot better with the 5er hooked up.
