I just need 1 additional axle, two alluminum rims with tires
So I'm not the only one thinking of doing this !
and the lower skirting of my trailer has 2 wheel wells formed into it ... to retain a neat factory look I'd want a fibreglass shop to form the new openings.
Are you going to keep the first 2 axles in the stock location ? Are you going to space the 3rd axle equal to the first 2 ? If so you can buy replacement fiberglass fenders for a tri axle trailer and use them.
My trailer's frame rail is about 15" deep with a 2x2 square tubing underneath. If I add a third axle I will remove the 2x2 and replace it with a 2x6.
That is a friggin beefy frame rail. Most trailers have a ~12" C channel with no 2x2. I'd venture to say that you don't need to beef that up at all. I'd have to run numbers to make that decision though.
Do you have any pictures of your trailer and the rack on the back ?
When are you going to do yours ?
