The units you see in compartments meet (or are supposed to) specific requirements for keeping exhaust out of the living space. If you just stick it in the basement can crank it up, you need to be very worried about carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust fumes.
You need to be careful with exterior mounting (ie: don't put it under an open window)
Another issue with using an interior compartment is the exhaust puts out a lot of heat. That hot compartment will heat up the interior to a degree. Your air/con will be fighting the heat the generator is putting into the trailer making it less effective.
We keep the generator chained in the back of the truck under a box to keep it out of sight. We run a cord from there to the trailer.
