Airbags installation for heavy 5th wheel

I made a video of my airbags installation on the truck a few weeks ago. My 5th wheel tows much more confidently, less bouncy with the extra support. For any interested:

(17K GVWR) hence the need for those air bags on that SRW with a 14K tow rating.

    Nice truck.

    Best of luck

Per Ford's website he can tow 20,600lbs for fifth wheel assuming he has a Crew Cab Platinum (which is what the grill looks like he has) for a SRW with either 3.31 or 3.55 gears. Max GCW is 28,700lbs. Max conventional towing is 15k.

This is very close. Max GCWR is 28,900, max towing fifth wheel is 20,600 and both are numbers which I can stay under. But this trailer puts me 120 lbs over max on the rear axle but significantly over GVWR. With the trailer axles positioned where they are, the trailer really is better suited for a DRW due to excessive pin weight. I'm not sure how long I'll have this trailer but it is well controlled with some extra mitigations including the airbags. Super solid and confident going down the road.

Very well made video. I kept watching your hands looking for traces of blood. Guess I'm one of a dying breed that can't touch a vehicle with a wrench in hand without drawing blood.

LOL! No blood on this project but I have to confess I did wash my hands a couple of times to get the grime off. Dirty hands are a reality but kind of distracting on camera. ;)

No the dying breed is the one of us that don't notice the cuts until cleaning up after the job is done.

  • I agree. Inflating to 80 psi levels the rear end and removes the bounce.
  • This is why I recommend them, because they work with your existing springs, and shocks to tame the load. Finding the right air pressure is the next step to a better ride.
