To the OP. Where are the pictures. If you did not take any directly after the incident there probably is no chance of any kind of settlement.
Any witnesses to verify the hitch was still closed and the locking pin in place?
Not sure how the king pin can get to the bed. My trailer would be resting on the bed rails long before the king pin could touch the floor of the bed.
