With the thicker jaws as you mention and the 1" thick B&W jaws it's very unlikely since the kingpin is in a higher position with more gap on the ones just mentioned. With these if you high hitch you really did not even look at all!
I totally agree!! Having driven big trucks my whole career almost every dropped trailer I've heard of or seen was the result of over confidence and/or not looking or checking for the proper trailer height. In thirty years plus years of driving I've only heard of ONE (1) instance where the fifth wheel coupler was defective! Most of us are usually in too much of a hurry OR we get distracted and that leads to bad things happening.
The company I worked for used to preach "GOAL"... Get Out AND Look, simple as that. That applies to backing as well as hooking up.
