Gosh, you've been around here even longer than me. Twelve years for me and this must be about the umpteenth thread or more, same subject, same hitch, same result.
Reese gets a lot of bashing here, right or wrong. Reese is the #1 selling hitch so there are many more out there and mistakes do happen. But there have been other brands reported also, even the almighty B&W.
The OP admits to being "kind of a novice" so something could have been missed in hitching. Just saying.
