Another weight question

My truck for comparison has 3100 on the rear axle 'empty'. That leaves you with 3k worth of tire. Truck empty is 7900 (full fuel, driver, toolbox, and tonneau). My trailer has a 1k tongue ready to camp minus toys. Load my wife and 2 kids, generator, wood, extra fuel, misc... 9k is out of the picture. Shoot, I've had 2500lb worth of gravel in mine, but I will admit with that weight the suspension does need a little help with support.

If you are trying to stay under GVWR, it isn't going to happen with that combo. Just remember the difference in a 3500 of our era truck is the rear spring pack.

Pin weight half or so of TV’s rating? Bring kitchen sink if desired.

Depends on what you mean by ok. What are you are trying to be ok with?
Will you exceed the GVWR - Yes
Will you exceed the payload rating - yes
Will you exceed the tow rate rating - maybe not
Will you exceed the GCVWR - yes

My truck with fuel and passengers is 7800,dry pin of 1115 would make 8900,correct? My GCWR is 17000 which means adding the curb weight of 7800 and the pin weight of 1115 and the GTW puts me just beyond the 17000. Would this be correct conclusion then?

If the dry weight of FW is 8,150,dry pin should be around 1,600, not 1,115. You should still be able to stay under your axle rating. The GCVWR will be close, hope your transmission is up to the task.

Realistically, your FW will weigh about 9500 lbs as it is going down the road loaded for a camping trip. That will give you a pin weigh of about 1900 lbs minimum. Now do the math using the realistic numbers.

Well its obvious that im not fully understanding these numbers. The advertised pin wt is 1115,we will only carry appx 400 lbs of cargo which will increase the pin wt a bit,but 1900 ? How did you come to that number?

Most FWs will have a pin wt between 20-25 percent, dry or loaded. You are showing less than 14 percent dry pin. That would be closer to tongue wt of a TT.

400 lbs is laughable but lets go with it. At 8550 your pin weight is at least 1700 lbs (pin weight on a FW is at least 20%, and more often closer to 22%).

As far as your 400 lbs - Your not even close. The rolling weight Will not be less than 1000 lbs above dry weight, and more likely to be closer to 1,250 lbs. But you don't have to take my word for it, ask in a new post what is realistic. Better yet, search on this forum and see what others have reported their difference between dry weigh and loaded weight is.

I am not saying you can't tow this FW, or carry the pin wt. I'm just saying the pin wt will be much more than you think. You can add suspension help if needed. If yours is an automatic transmission, I think that will be your weakest link, when pushing the GCVWR.
