I've been driving professionally for going on 30 years... about 18 of those were in a "city tractor" (single rear axle) with a 53' trailer...
We're looking at upgrading our current class A to a 5th wheel and I'm somewhat confused regarding tow vehicles... I had gotten my semi stuck a couple times... nothing I didn't get myself out of with a little judicious driving techniques... so I'm curious as to why most 5th wheels I see going down the road are being pulled by 4X4 pickups?
Sure, I live in Colorado, but a good many of these rigs are from out of state... even places like Texas and Arizona...
I've got nothing against 4X4's, 'cept I hear the RWD trucks ride nicer, not to mention the reduced maintenance costs...
So, any CDL (current or former) drivers out there who can shed some light on the similarities/ differences between semi's and 5th wheel pulling'?
Suggest you visit Escapees HDT forum.
LOTS of long/heavy trailers being towed by class 7 & 8 tractors (tandem and 'singled')
Lots of 'former' commercial drivers - as well as folks with CDLs who never drove for a living.
Also a few current and retired LEOs.
However, since a HDT can be licensed as a MH in most states, a CDL is *not* necessary - and in fact most prefer *not* to have one.
The capabilities a HDT (both "whoa" and "go") far exceed any pickup and/or MDTs.
And, as you know, a well cared for used HDT can;) be had for way less than a new pickup - with the potential of "outliving" it's use as an RV (trailer) tow vehicle.
Over the road "Creature Comforts" can't be beat!.
The topic of 'capabilities' on soft ground and/or wet grass comes up
from time to time - better for you to search the forum for the discussion/s rather than beat the *pickup* 4x4 vs 2x4 pros and cons here.
Escapees HDT forumAnd...oh yeah - there's at least two HDT TV *female* owners - as well as many DWs who share the driving/towing with their DHs..:)
BTW - no dog in the fight...and gave up my CDL about 1998.
