I think people should throw a 5 gallon can filled in their tool box and travel that way for a while. THEN decide do I really want to loose the bed space and spend the $$$ to have the tank. Ya need to stop to pee so why not stop and get fuel at the same time?
To save a few $ now and then is NOT worth my time. I use the TruckStops, use the facilities, possibly get something to eat and NEVER worry about getting in or out.
A few $$ now and then?? AZ .90 cents a gallon same town, next state NM cheapest was .85 more than than what I paid so I can skip that state for fuel. Go the other direction CA 4.09 that was $1.55 a gallon more so my 80 gallon tank isn't worth it? I have a range of 1000 miles +/- and I can choose the lowest price along my way. Truck stops get premium $$ and I wish we had had the apps available when I was taking on 150 gallons every other day.
In addition to the fuel savings which can be substantial, the Aux. tanks gives you the option To: not to stop for fuel, or when/where to stop for fuel. In some case you do not need to stop for fuel, you can just go to the CG and refuel later. Or you can make a restroom stop and not need to refuel. Fuel stops don't have to be tied to bathroom stops and vise versa.
The aux tank ultimately gives you a little more freedom and flexibility when long distance traveling.
Having that flexibility makes the trip a little more relaxing.
Relaxation is what the whole experience is all about.
