On Ebay they sell 17ft strips on rolls with IR remote for $35-40. Not the highest quality stuff but it works and is cut to length. One tip make sure the underside surface you are adhering the strip to is squeaky clean (Acetone) and do it on a warm day. The tape on the backside is not that great so prep is important.
I bought the multi-color one. Kids get a kick out of it.
I did exactly that, small hole under the molding strip into a cabinet, then 12v and the remote, works, looks great. I just went with white but the remote let's you dim it. I really like it and it was super easy to install. By doing it that way you can use the lights with the awning in or out.
