Recently purchased used 5th wheel (first one) and wanted to jack it up to pull wheels and inspect brakes. I was told by an RV mechanic to leave it hitched and than jack it up. Less strain on 5er frame...

I always have my trailer hitched with truck E brake engaged.
I had to have an axle replaced once under warranty because of an axle tube failure. I40 in Arizona with car sized chuck holes that were about 6 inches deep.
When the axle was off I was able to inspect the axle tube and it is very thin gage steel. There is no way I would ever jack on the tube or u-bolt directly after seeing that.
