BF Goodrick Tire Failure

Mine felt like a square tire, but was close to home, and not towing. I'm just glad the tire dealer replaced it free, even though it had 25k miles on it.

I definitely felt something too (did not admit that to BFG.) Interesting though, is that I was positive that it was a front tire. My steering wheel was oscillating a bit and the front fender of the truck was too. I got off the freeway and started searching for a problem. I looked hardest at the front tires, but when I couldn't find anything I ran my hands all over the rears too. Including rolling the truck for 180deg tire rotation. Checked everything and everywhere I could think of, including torqueing all the lug nuts.

Finally gave up and drove, and it wasn't but a couple of miles before that rear tire let the tread go free. A mistake to drive it I guess, but didn't feel like calling for a hook. The tire never did lose pressure.

You can bet that, a couple of thousand miles later when I felt a similar oscillation, and this time I was towing, we got off the highway. Spent a night in a Provo UT parking lot. Fortunately the next morning I was able to feel the bulge in a front tire and swapped it out for the spare.

It's not just BF Goodrich tires. This photo is of an OEM General Grabber that did over $4000 of damage to our truck. And yes, a TPMS was in use - there were no pressure or temperature alarms prior to the tread separation.

Michelin LTX M/S2s replaced these OEM tires at 25,000 miles.

Yes. Sounds familiar.

I had a failure that wiped out the side of my bed. The tires were Rugged Terrain, which is the next generation BFG after the Rugged Trail. Tires were almost new, very low miles. After this, I had tread separation on two more of the set, and BFG ended up paying most of the replacement cost for the entire set. I went with Michelin.

Michelin has ruined the BFG line, purposely, in my opinion. They want you to step up to the Michelin brand. Unfortunately they don't offer a good offroad tread pattern in the Michelin line.



Here is the tread separation bulge in one of the next two that failed. Luckily I caught these before blowup.

I had two Rugged Terrain 285/17's replaced a few years ago under warranty, that developed sunken, and flat areas. Luckily I caught them before they came apart. When these wear out I'm leaving BFG for good.

Yes, running max air pressure for less than max load is over inflating! It will result in less traction for go and stopping!

Very true. My 98 basically the same as your truck I always ran 72 front, 40-45 solo and 80 loaded rear. Can't remember my rear axle weight but my total load was 20,500#.

I agree, I found my Dad a set of 3rd Gen Michelin take offs for his 94 he towed HEAVY with. After installing them we realized the 17's had a much lower MAX load rating. He was running at MAX weight for the tires for several years and thousands of miles with no problems.
