Hi,
While most forest campgrounds are limited in length due to them being built back in the 30's, when a car had a 80 HP engine was considered a high performance engine, and trailer length was limited to about 35' due to weight more than anything else. BLM usually are not marked out locations, but more a meadow that you park in, or bare desert land that is in a designated camping area.
I have found many camping areas where parking a 40' motorhome was going to be really easy. Not every place where I could get in my 30' motorhome, due to a ditch near the roadway that might be a little to steep for a larger RV to not bottom out, so some restrictions like that can be overcome with a shovel if you really want to park there. Or bring boards to get across a especially deep area.
I found the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in the forest is a free camping area, suitable for most of the summer, due to being 7500' elevation. From October to May, it is covered with feet of snow, and is fairly green all summer.
Quartzsite has many great places to camp out on BLM land, well suited for 40' RV's. Along the Colorado River near Moab is another area I want to continue to explore. Many great boondocking sites. What I did do is camp in town for a few days, and explore the area with my car. I found many suitable locations. I need to return to.
Here is a website you might enjoy. FreeCampgrounds.com there are about 2032 campgrounds listed today. More are added each month! Some are just "You can park free at Joe's tire shop", but many are real boondocking sites.
Have fun camping!
Fred.
