With the RBW hitch I had I would do a pull test, I did not trust it. But with the B&W I don't waste my time. The test for me is to close and lock the handle. I will also look at the jaws when I close the tailgate.
I have heard of one damaged bed with a B&W and found out it was because the person pinned the locking arm open.
